Q: Does Power Corrupt? How or How Not? Why or Why Not?
A: In most cases, power does corrupt the person, the government, or the place that has the most power. In some cases though, the leaders, the government, or the place with the power has proved that they can handle the power that has been given to them. Adolf Hitler, Fidel Castro, and Saddam Hussein are all examples of people that have been corrupted by the power that has been given to them. Winston Churchill, Mohandas Gandhi, and Abraham Lincoln are all examples of people that have used the power they have been given positively.
Adolf Hitler worked his way up to being the Fuhrer of Germany; the Fuhrer is the position of president and the position of chancellor combined. He used this power to his advantage and to the country’s disadvantage. When he found someone who did not agree with him, thought differently than him, or was not who he thought the perfect person should be, he simply put them in concentration camps to be killed and surrounded himself with people who agreed with him, thought the same way as him, or was who he thought the perfect person should act like, think like, and look like. He covered up trying to exterminate the Jews with World War II and, for that, is known as evil, idiotic, and terrifying. In the beginning of World War II the German war machines were unstoppable, but as time went on, at the Battle of Stalingrad, the Allied Army closed in on Berlin. As time went on Hitler let the power he had go to his head. He thought that he could create the perfect world when he had gained enough power.
Fidel Castro was a dictator, but did have an easy life. This could have been a reason as to why Fidel Castro let the power he was given go to his head. His mother, Lina Ruz Gonzalez, became pregnant with him while his father was still married to his first wife. It was not until Fidel Castro was fifteen or sixteen that his father divorced his first wife and wed his mother. Then he was finally able to change his name from Ruz to Castro. He was very smart, but focused more on sports than on school in high school. Castro became very interested in politics and government in Cuba. He did not have much money to support his family and his marriage was ended because of it. Castro believed that the only way to mend Latin America’s poor class was by violence. He took over Cuba by force in 1959. Fidel Castro attempted to end United States economic dominance in the country, which created friction between the United States and Cuba. He became a dictator; he suppressed any radio broadcast, magazines, newspapers, television, and books. He then established relations with the Soviet Union. “The USSR sent more than 100 Spanish-speaking advisers to help organize Cuba's defense committee,” (about.com). They also had oil imported from the Soviet Union instead of the United States; this put an even bigger strain on both of the countries. In response to that, the United States cut of the sugar import to Cuba. Fidel declared Cuba a socialist state in 1961. The day after this was declared, Cuban exiles invaded and tried to overthrow Fidel Castro. The United States denied any participation in trying to overthrow Castro, though it was proven that the United States had been planning to try to overthrow him since 1959. He later ended democratic elections and declared Cuba a communist country. The Soviet Union sent nuclear missiles to Cuba, but the United States demanded the missiles be taken off of the island and checks every ship that is headed for the island. The United States ended diplomatic relations with Cuba after the actions that were taken by Castro. He may have felt that having all of the power in Cuba meant that he could do anything he wanted.
Winston Churchill was a very positive influence on the world and used his power positively to help people. He was positive light in the darkness of World War II. The power given to a person is not as important as how the person uses it. The person can use the power for others or for their own personal game.

Was Alex really avenging Persian wrongs?
Do you think Alexander honestly felt like he was avenging Persian wrongs? Or was that just propaganda to mask his goal of conquest?
In the beginning, Alexander did believe that he was avenging Persian wrongs, but as time went on he became set on conquering the world. He used the power he had to take over the known world and the fact that he was avenging Persian wrongs to mask his true goal. During his travels to Persia he was told he was the son of Anon and won a contest, the prize was being able to rule the world. This made him very confident in himself and he was able to conquer the world. He wanted to do the things his father did not get the chance to do.

What compels someone to lead others?

There are many reasons as to what compels someone to lead others. They may feel the need to be controlling of others or to be the leader. They also may need help and power to achieve their goal. Alexander needed the people behind him to conquer the world. Other people see how oppressed their country is and think they may make a good leader. Most people want the power and control that comes with leading a country or place. Many people feel a need to be on top and in charge of others; it is just part of being a human.

Biographies
Write short biographies on Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle.
Socrates-
There is not much known about whom Socrates really was, but there are many accounts of who he could have been. He did not write any of his works down. His theory was that no one knew anything, we simply all ask questions. Socrates was a Greek philosopher who lived from 469 to 399 B.C.E. He is the main figure in most of Plato's dialogues. He was ridiculed by many of the people of his time, but generations after him have realized how important he was to history. He was charged guilty of corrupting the youth and chose to be put to death.
Plato-
Plato and Socrates are very alike; He often listened to Socrates and when Socrates died, he wrote down many of the conversations he had with Socrates. Plato was also a philosopher who lived from 429 to 347 B.C.E. He was a citizen of high status in Athens, Greece. He was a very influential author of his time and continues to influence every generation who reads his work.
Aristotle-
Aristotle lived from 384 to 322 and was also a philosopher. He studied under Plato at the Academy for twenty years and they disagree on almost everything, even though he was one of the best students. He created the first encyclopedia and the logic that we still think with today. He helped shaped society as we know it today.

Is history created by ‘the people’ or individuals?
Q: Is history created by ‘the people’ or individuals?
A: History is created by both ‘the people’ and individuals. ‘The people’ could be defined as many things such as, the government, people living in a local region together, religious groups, tribes, countries, or families. Individuals are a very important part of history. They shape the past, the present, and the future in small and large ways. Individual people can influence a whole city, village, civilization, or country, like the way Hitler influenced the Germans. Hitler influenced all of the Germans to believe that they were the perfect people and everyone else would have to be exterminated to create the perfect world. Individuals can also influence people around the world. People that are a positive influence are Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. Saddam Hussein was a bad influence to his people. Those people can be a positive influence or a negative influence depending on how much power that single person has. Gandhi was known as the father of the Indian nation because he helped free the Indian people from the British rule. Mother Teresa gave up everything she had to work with the poorest of the poor and instructed others to do so too as well. Martin Luther King Jr., who fought for the rights of African Americans, did not stop when he was thrown in jail and ridiculed for doing so. Saddam Hussein influenced the entire Iraqi nation while he was the leader. Some parts of history can be classified as created by both the individual person and ‘the people’. Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks both started the movement towards full equality in America and around the world, but it took many other people’s time, labor, money, and effort to make that dream become a reality. The first man on the moon was an individual person, though this advancement in history is usually viewed as history that was created by ‘the people’. It took many individual and group jobs to put one man on the moon, so it is partially an advancement in history that was created by both the individual person and ‘the people’. If one person did not correctly complete his or her job then the success of the whole entire project may have been at stake.
The history that is created by the government is important because we can learn from the mistakes and successes of certain governments and the other governments that came before it. Our government and leaders learn from past governments and leaders that came before them to help shape the future. If the future governments learn from the past leaders and governments choices, than the governments of every country in the future can have a better government system and have their leader make better choices. Athens, being the birth-place of democracy, shaped America and other places as we know them today and we will all continue to try and improve democracy as time goes on. The Athenian democracy was not a true democracy because it had slaves and people who were not born in Athens that were not allowed to vote on what would happen in there city and did not have any rights. Most of the ancient civilizations such as, Rome, Greece, and Egypt have affected many of the countries today.
The history that is created by people living in a local region together is important because other people in different regions can learn from those people’s failures and achievements. This can help us create a better future for generations to come. The history that is created by different ethnicities is important because those people know the history of their country and should share it with others. If they share and teach others about the history of their people, then their history can live on for many generations to come after them. If more people learn about different ethnicities, than those ethnicities will never die and will forever live on.
The history that is created by religious groups is important to them and other people because it is said that faith is a very important part of a person’s life. If that person has faith, anything is possible. From a person’s religious beliefs, we can study deeper into how their culture worked and thrived.
The history that is created by tribes is important because they can have their culture carried on for many generations and are able to teach other people about their culture and the hardships they may have faced. Other cultures can benefit from learning about another culture by realizing how special culture is and how we need to keep carrying on the traditions of our ancestors for generations to come after them and us.
The history that is created by countries is important because it can bring other countries together. The Olympics were created in Athens but bring countries together for friendly competition to see who takes home the gold and brings peace to the world, if only for a moment.
The history that is created by families is important because people need to remember where they have come from and where their family has come from. If they remember that then their family traditions will be able to live on for many generations to come after them. Culture and traditions are a very large part of history, in fact, culture and traditions make up almost all of our past. Culture is often lost, such as the Aztec’s, Inca’s, and Mayan’s cultures, but culture can also live on, such as the Indian’s culture. The Indians had to fight to keep their culture in the United States because the Americans wanted to make the Indians more like themselves. The Americans wanted the Indians to look like them, act like them, talk like them, learn their traditions, convert to Christianity, and live in houses.

Explain how the origins of theatre in Athens are tied to both religion and politics.

There are a few ways that the origins of theatre in Athens are tied to both religion and politics, but, for the most part, theatre is art and entertainment. You can have a play that focuses on the pros or cons on religion and politics. It can be about the religious or political standpoint in the country or the struggles people face with religion and politics.
Was Athens really a 'democracy'?

Athens was not a true democracy, though it was the birthplace of the thought democracy. A true democracy is defined as, “government by the people; a form of government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised directly by them or by their elected agents under a free electoral system,” and, “a state of society characterized by formal equality of rights and privileges,” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/democracy). Athens, however, had slaves. These slaves and people who were not native to Athens were not considered citizens so they could not vote on the government or what happened in their city. The main thought of democracy was born in Athens and was changed throughout time and will continue to change.

Persian War
Write the script for a skit exploring the Persian Wars from the Persian point-of-view.
Scene 1
General: Men, Aristagoras has enlisted help in the Athenians to plot against us.
Lieutenant 1: What must we do General?
General: We must conquer all of Greece before they become a threat to us.
Lieutenant 2: How must we do this, General?
General: We must travel up the coast of Greece, conquering the cities one by one. Since Aristagoras enlisted the help of the Athenians we will conquer them last, so they will have no one to help them fight.
Lieutenant 1: We will round up all of the troops and start this conquest immediately.
Scene 2
General: Good work so far, men. We have conquered most of Greece.
Lieutenant 1: We defeated the Spartans, now onto Athens!
Lieutenant 2: Yes, they will now know how powerful we are!
General: Now, men, suit up and get ready for battle.
Scene 3
General: There is no one here! Burn the coward’s city!
Lieutenant 1: Yes sir!
Lieutenant 2: Let’s hurry so we can celebrate!
Scene 4
Lieutenant 1: Those Athenians are cowards!
Lieutenant 2: Yes, they completely forfeited!
General: I have just received word from the Athenians; they are on an island not far from here and want us to come and fight. Suit up men; we will win this once and for all.
Scene 5
General: They’ve defeated us!
Lieutenant 1: They have won.
General: We have been defeated. We must stay in Persia.

Olympics

The Greek Olympics included both athleticism and religion. Today, since so many different peoples from different regions and religions participate in the Olympics, religion is not as large a part as it used to be. Now, the Olympics are a friendly competition between every country to see who will take home the gold. They also used to kill the loser of the game while rewarding the winner with a wonderful prize. Today, there is a healthy rivalry between every country and no penalties for the losers. The Olympics have evolved into games that bring all of the countries together and promote unity.

"War is a form of technology". Agree or Disagree.

"War is a form of technology". Agree or Disagree.
War is not a form of technology. It does, however, use technology. Using technology in war can be very helpful to the country using it. If the US Army has surveillance in Iran than they can watch what Iran is doing and stay ahead. If Iran or North Korea is able to infiltrate the United States or other countries it would be very unsafe for that country. War is a tool, but not a form of technology. There are many different pieces of technology used in war. The trucks and tanks, computers, radio communication, and missals all are different pieces of technology.
Monuments

Give several examples of monuments in Maryland / DC / PA that might be familiar to folks who live here but which would not be understood by outsiders without an explanation. Please include your own or public domain photos.
There are many different monuments in the Maryland/DC/PA area. There is Jerusalem Mills, Hayes House, and Steppingstone Museum. Jerusalem Mills was built in 1772 and thrived into the early twentieth century. By 1961 the last miller had died and the State of Maryland bought it. In 1985 the Friends of Jerusalem Mills organized to restore the gristmill and adjacent buildings, and explore and revive the village's colorful history. “Steppingstone museum is a private, not for profit museum which preserves and demonstrates the rural arts and crafts of the 1880-1920 period in Harford County,” (http://www.steppingstonemuseum.org/About.html). It was made for the education of young children and is a hands-on experience.

Conspiracy Theories

Why do you think so many conspiracy theories surround the pyramids and the megaliths? Give examples of a few and explain where you think they come from.
There are so many conspiracy theories surrounding the pyramids and the megaliths because, though we know a lot of information about them, we do not know how they were built or who exactly built them. People believe that slaves built the pyramids; while historians say that there were people that were paid to build them. This conspiracy theory comes from ancient writing that had been found and talked about slaves building the pyramids. Megaliths were said to hold sacrifices and burials. Historians know this because there were buried bodies and sacrificial tables found in the Megaliths. These conspiracy theories have been around since ancient times.

What Is Important?
Q: What Is ‘Important’?
A: Important is defined as, “of much or great significance or consequence,” and “of considerable influence or authority, as a person or position” (http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/important). The first definition basically means that if something is of importance it is something that is a priority or something that can make a significant difference or have a great impact to a person, situation, people, country, village, island, or civilization. The second definition means that a person is of a higher stature than another throughout most or all of their life. A president of a company is of higher importance than a person who may run the mail and file rooms. Importance is also defined as, “crucial: of extreme importance; vital to the resolution of a crisis,” and “authoritative: having authority or ascendancy or influence” (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn). This means that in some situations such as a fire, it is important to have a water source to put out the fire and resolve the situation quickly.
Different people find different things important. Young infants think that the simplest and smallest things are the most important such as, having fun toys that will keep them interested, formula, diaper changes and food, which keeps them healthy. Children think that playing and anything that is fun is most important, while what is really important is education and having someone to take care of them. Being in a healthy environment is critical to a child’s development such as, caring parents, a good education, and a safe home to live in. Teenagers think many things are important, even if, in reality, the things are the least important to young adults. They believe that having the newest technology such as, cell phones, laptops, and iPods, hanging out with popular people, and having the coolest, newest clothes are the most important things in their life. Education is also important for many who are trying to advance to a specific career. Acceptance to the college of their choice can be a significant event in their life. This can affect the rest of that person’s life and many other people’s lives. Adults find other things important that teenagers and the elderly may not find important such as, money, to support their family, family, so they can take care of those important people in their lives, faith, to keep God important in their life, education, because if they are educated they will get further in life and be able to succeed, a decent job, to support their family and themselves, and providing for their family. The elderly find many things important such as, health, so they can live a fulfilling, long life, retirement, so they can provide for themselves and their family, and their family, so they can have someone to take care of them in their old age and when they are ill. Family is also important for companionship. Loneliness can possibly bring on depression and other important illnesses.
Different bushiness can find different things important to their success. A farmer will find that it is critical to his crop to have water for the crops to grow. If there is a drought in the land then the farmer will experience setbacks such as, not producing the crops you need, if they do not have crops to sell then they will lose money, if they lose money then they may have to shut down their farm, and if they have to shut down their farm then the economy will not be at its highest, many people will lose their jobs and the unemployment rate will grow.
A CEO of a large company would need to have many people buying their products to have the company prosper and grow throughout time. If they do not have people buying their products then they would have to shut down their company, and if they have to shut down their company many people could lose their jobs and the economy will begin to lower.
In private schools, education is very important. There are a lot of things that affect this like attendance. If the school does not receive the amount of attendance needed, it would not be able to operate and, therefore, would have to close. Since private schools do not get funding for text books and tuition, fund raisers are very important to private schools. Not receiving these things can cause great consequences to the school and the students attending it. If the school is over populated then they will not have enough time to spend on each child and will have to rent trailers as school rooms.
Different cultures find many different things important. Pyramids and death are both very important to the Egyptian culture. They make sure that there dead are taken care of very carefully. They made sure pyramids were secure enough to keep grave robbers out since many people of high importance were laid to rest there. Art was very important to Roman culture. They had sculptures, paintings and plays that gave the Romans a higher sense of culture and made them feel like they were better than other countries of their time. These kinds of things were not important to every culture because they each had their strong points in society that put them ahead of other civilizations and countries they were competing with. Before the earthquake in Haiti the things they found important were different than after the earthquake struck their island. Some important things to Haiti today are staying alive because of the damage and aftershocks and rebuilding the island’s government and documentation. It is also important for them to try and rebuild since the loss was not only lives but government buildings, homes, hospitals, local businesses, schools, and more.
Importance means many different things to different people and different cultures. It can be used to describe what is most significant to people, places, and things and can change from day to day. With the changing styles and environments of certain people and cultures, what is important will also change.

What Is History (Edited)
Q: What is history? Which theory of history is the most beneficial?
A: History is made up of many subjects and events, and can have many different definitions and meanings. History is defined as “the continuum of events occurring in succession leading from the past to the present and even into the future” (wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn). Basically, what this quote is trying to explain to people searching for historical information is that history is the continuation of events that are happening in chronological order and will lead into the future. History is also defined as “a chronological record of significant events (as affecting a nation or institution) often including an explanation of their causes” (http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/02088/introduction.htm). In other words, history is made up of all different events, small or large; significant and minor, that happened in the past and could still affect the people of today and the people of tomorrow positively and negatively. History is made up of people’s true stories of the past, as well as stories of the well-known empires and civilizations, such as ancient Rome, Greece, and England and the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas, that people read about and can experience fully and in detail in a textbook, on the computer, or on the news. “The author Jared Diamond, in his book Guns, Germs, and Steel, stressed that geography determined the destinies of civilizations and the history as a whole,” (http://library.thinkquest.org/06aug/02088/introduction.htm). The meaning of this quote explains to people that geography can determine history completely as a whole. Geography can have various effects on history by changing events and in some cases changing cultures over time. This is somewhat true because if you have good, fertile land, like the Fertile Crescent, which held cities like Babylon and civilizations like Sumer, then you will have a prosperous civilization such as, Greece and Rome, and with a prosperous civilization comes technological advancements such as, writing, paper money, automobiles, mathematics, computers, and cell phones, and when the people who live in that village or city have technological advancements, that civilization becomes a bigger, more involved part of history. The Fertile Crescent was home to many great civilizations, cities, and villages. These villages thrived because of the fertile land and water resources that were given to them. Geography can also affect history in negative, unproductive ways. People trying to start a civilization in a barren land, such as a desert land, will find it hard to prosper and thrive because no crops will grow and there is no water source for the people and animals that must be domesticated to have a prosperous civilization. Technology advancements could be slow or minimal, if existent at all in these countries, villages, or civilizations. These areas may be poverty stricken and take much more time to develop than the area where geography has helped the civilization, people, animals, and crops flourish and thrive.
The best theory of history is the Linear theory of history because it is the easiest theory for modern day people to understand and take valuable information from. The Linear theory of history also helps the person gathering information about a certain place, such as ancient Rome, Greece, England, and civilizations such as, the Mayans, the Aztecs, and the Incas; narrow the information down to not just the history of Rome, but a certain part or certain people from Rome. The Linear theory of history gives the person trying to find information every aspect of the place’s history; it gives them the government of the country, city, village, or civilization, the background of the people that reside in those places, the important, notable people that came from that country, city, or village, the crops and goods produced there, and the geographical state of the country or civilization. The Linear theory of history lays every piece of information, and even pictures, out for the person or people conducting the research to gain a better understanding of history. Linear comes from the Latin word, linearis, which is translated into created by lines. A person can simply look at a timeline and see all of the events that happened in history in chronological order. Linear history lays everything out so people can access the information they are looking for more quickly.
The Linear theory of history is a better theory of history than the Cyclical theory of history, the Hegelian theory of history, and the Vortextual theory of history for many reasons. The Cyclical theory of history is defined as “a doctrine that all events occur in cycles that are more or less alike” (http://frank.mtsu.edu/~nboone/theoryhistory.pdf). This basically means that throughout history events will continue to repeat themselves in cycles. This theory is not as thorough as the Linear theory of history. The Hegelian theory of history is defined as “the monist, idealist philosophy of Hegel in which the dialectic of thesis, antithesis, and synthesis is used as an analytic tool in order to approach a higher unity or a new thesis,” (http://www.answers.com/topic/hegelianism). The quote is basically saying that you have a thesis, an antithesis, and a synthesis. One event leads to another event and so forth. The Hegelian theory of history is based on behavior and relationships of varied cultures and how these factors have affected history. Even though this is a very valid theory, the Linear theory is much more helpful to the person looking for information. The Vortextual theory of history resembles a vortex starting with a large event such as, the Renaissance age, and then moves down to smaller events such as, the Dark ages. The person using this theory will not get all of the information they may be looking for. The Linear theory of history is better than the Cyclical theory of history, the Hegelian theory of history and the Vortextual theory of history because it is much easier to understand and tells the person looking at the timeline the specific events that happened with additional information on each event, while the Cyclical theory of history, the Hegelian theory of history and the Vortextual theory of history do not lay any information out, in a clear picture and can be more confusing for the person or people trying to use the Vortextual, Cyclical, and Hegelian theories of history to conduct research instead of the Linear theory of history. The theory of Cyclical history, the theory of Hegelian history, and the theory of Vortextual history are exceptional ways to gather information about history, but the Linear theory of history is the most helpful theory while trying to gather information on certain events, people, empires, and civilizations in history.
